Rowan sat on the couch holding a fitness magazine she had found in Jake’s gym. The article about maximizing arm gains without compromising joints wasn’t nearly enough to hold her attention. All she could hear was Jake’s reaction to the dresses that Serra and Vivienne were wearing.

And their makeup. And how nice they looked. And how excited they were

“Rowan? Rowan.” Jake waved his hands in front of her face. “Hey. We’re leaving.”

“Good,” she wanted to say. “Your asses look fat in those dresses. Hope you don’t get murdered on your date.”

These were all words that bubbled and boiled inside of her, but she kept her face disinterested and lifted her gaze from the magazine just long enough to look at Jake.

“Oh? Okay, then. Have fun.”

Holding up the magazine, she pretended even harder that this article was her new gospel, that she would be queen of joint preservation. Rowan would become an unstoppable force at the gym, the epitome of self-improvement and—

The front door clicked shut and Rowan accidentally ripped the magazine in half.

“Have fun,” she groaned. “I don’t want them to have fun. I want them to be miserable, to see that life isn’t about fun and games, that they need to be working on getting stronger and Not. Going. On. Stupid. DATES!”

Jumping to her feet, she threw the magazine and it scattered in the air like a flock of startled birds. Grabbing at a pillow from the couch, she picked it up and shoved her face into it before SCREAMING!

What little mana her body held released, causing the pillow to erupt into flames. Startled, she threw it on the floor, only for the bits of the magazine to catch on fire as well. Gasping, she started stomping on the fire, dancing around the apartment as the embers spread.

“No no no no no!” she railed, then ran to the fridge. Rowan pulled out a bottle of magic water and sucked down a huge mouthful, her mana briefly returning.

“Firewall,” she growled.

While the spell could create and manipulate fire, it also allowed her to control any nearby flames. Rowan broke out in a sweat as she forced the fire into a burning spiral which she lifted off of the ground. Satisfied that she had taken it all, she slammed down on it with her consciousness, extinguishing the flames. In a panic, she ran out into the living room to inspect the floor for damage.

“Tell us how you really feel,” murmured Dex.

Rowan bolted upright, wincing at the fact that she had forgotten Dex had been taking a nap on the CRAPTOP. He had just witnessed her literal meltdown.

“I feel great,” she lied, kneeling down to pick up the bits of partially-burned paper.

If Jake learned about this, he would be so angry with her. She sniffled quietly as she cleaned up her mess, tossing the remains of the magazine into the trash, knowing that the fire had been extinguished completely. The pillow, on the other hand, couldn’t just be tossed out. After studying it for a moment, she simply turned it over and threw it toward the other side of the couch.
